Terroir. Harmony. Time.

Vino Gross stands for typical regional grape varieties and distinguishes between two wine styles: those defined by terroir and those defined by maturation.

We rely on traditional, natural methods. The wines ferment spontaneously – without the aid of artificial yeast – and mature over a long period in wooden barrels. We place great importance on bottling unfiltered wines with no finings added.

Handcrafted
on terraces

Our high, terraced vineyards are located in Gorca and feature slopes with inclinations of up to 65%. The soil is limy, sparse and influenced by the climate of the Alps and Adriatic Sea. Maria and Michael are convinced that these are the perfect conditions for great wines.

People

Michael and Maria Gross are the heart and soul of Vino Gross.

“Over ten years ago we moved to Gorca to get to know the region, its people and its wines better. Slowly but surely, the unbelievable potential of this wine-growing region opened up for us. We gathered up all our courage, founded VINO GROSS and have since proven that it is possible to produce wines of the highest quality here. Sharing this challenging task with someone is one of the most wonderful aspects of the family business.”

Philosophy

It is only possible to tend the terraced vineyards on the steep slopes by hand and with great effort. Harvesting the grapes is also only possible by hand. This is reflected in the quality of the wines. In the case of some of our wines – Iglič, Colles and Gorca – we let the terroir of the wine speak for itself. In the case of others – e. g. Traminec – it is the maturation process in the cellar that reveals the winegrower’s signature more clearly.

At Vino Gross, we are thinking about tomorrow and beyond. Our vineyards are organic cultivated. We work hand in hand with the local people and in the spirit of maintaining good relations with our neighbours.

Ideal Soils
for our wines

The soils of Štajerska Slovenija offer the best conditions for the type of wine we want to produce. We do not mean “produce” in the sense of “make” or “manufacture”. The wines come into being under the influence of soil and climate. We support their development, mainly through precise manual work in the vineyard, harvesting by hand and lots of time maturing in the cellar.

Orientation

Our vineyards are located in the Slovenian wine-growing region of Štajerska Slovenija, more precisely in the Haloze region near the town of Ptuj. The small wine-growing town in which we press our wines amidst steep wine terraces is called Gorca. Our vines thrive here at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres above sea level in south-facing basins.

Soil structure

Our vines grow on limy marl. The humus-rich topsoil is sparse, so the vines root deep into the limy marl in search of nutrients. This is noticeable in the wines, which are elegant, focused, salty and with a long finish.

Microclimate

The climate is influenced by the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Balmy days and cool nights affect the aroma, as do intense periods of heat and precipitation (600 l/m² annually). The air retained in the basin terrace sites in Gorca heats up quickly. The changeable conditions exert a strong, invigorating stimulus on the vines and ensure that certain something in the wine.
